Start Beekeeping in the Spring
Winter is over. Honey bees over-winter as a colony, with a reduced colony size. But, their food and warmth often needs to be supplemented by their beekeeper. So, when spring comes, it’s time to celebrate a new year for bees. Additionally, as Lauren Arcuri of The Spruce says:
Spring is definitely the time to get new bees and start a hive!
We definitely agree that you should start your beekeeping in the Spring!
Why Should I Start Beekeeping in the Spring?
Starting a hive in Spring is consistent with the bees’ life cycle. Here are some factors that play into beginning your beekeeping in Spring:
- Spring is the time to build up the numbers in your bee colony.
- Early spring is the best time to replace your Queen, if necessary.
- Bee health is directly related to their nutrition. Bees function better and become stronger when they feed naturally.
- Spring brings an abundance of pollen and nectar.
- Bees will swarm to empty hives in the Spring, as they swarm and travel during this season.
