PREPARING AN OBSERVATION BEE HIVE

One of the things we love to do is educate children about bees, pollinators, and beekeeping. So, when the folks at Roswell Farmers & Artisans Market asked us to bring our Observation Bee Hive to one of their events, John Wright went up to the farm to get the demonstration hive. Here’s a video John filmed of one of the first steps in preparing the hive.

Finding the Queen in the Observation Bee Hive

Here’s what to look for:

The observation hive has glass on both sides so that people can see how the bees behave when they are in a hive. The entomology department at the University of Kentucky gives five benefits for using an observation hive:

Study honey bee colony structure and organization,
See different honey bee castes and their duties within the hive,
Follow the development of honey bee larvae,
Watch comb building, honey production and storage,
Observe their communication with the bee dance.
