What’s Happening on the
Bee Farm Spring 2019
Spring was early this year, so the camellias and daffodils are already blown, and our azaleas are already blooming. In fact, the other day we noticed that the dogwoods are in bloom. So, we are wondering if they will last until the Dogwood Festival on April 12. With all the early changes in Nature we noticed in the neighborhood, we were wondering if the bees were affected. So, we asked for an update on the Bee Farm, Spring 2019.
Update on the Bee Farm Spring 2019
Luckily, John Wright was in town this past week. So, when I asked him, “What’s happening on the farm?”, he actually was able to take photos. Here is his update he gave us:
After a challenging winter with excessive rainfall, we are in colony restocking mode. We are building “Nucs” (pronounced nukes), which mean’s “Nucleus”, or small starter colonies. This is what we do in the early spring to give these starter hives a chance to build their strength, vitality, and numbers so they can ideally be great honey producers throughout the season.
Here is a closeup of the “Nucs:”
Urban Beekeeping Class
If you want to learn more about beekeeping or start your own hives, Bee Wild has recently teamed up with the Rescue Bee Sanctuary in Lawrenceville to teach a series of urban beekeeping classes. The first Spring class will happen on Saturday, April 20, 2019, and is limited to 10 participants. Here’s a description of the class:
As our update indicates, beekeeping is a seasonal activity. There are different tasks in Spring, Autumn, and Winter, and our class focuses on the seasonality of the hobby, rather than the generic “beginner, intermediate, and advanced” approach.
Urban Beekeeping is designed to adapt to the individual needs of the class members, whether it’s acquiring beginning skills or helping more experienced students learn the finer points. The class will give you the basic skills to get started in beekeeping and focus on Spring activities as the bees are just starting to produce honey.
