2016 Earth Day Challenge

I like the title of our 2016 Earth Day Challenge, “Sustainable Isn’t Just a Word.” When I picked this title, I wanted people to know that preserving the environment really is you taking small steps, as often as you can. These actions cumulatively make a difference to your family, your home, your community, your state, your country, and your planet. So, while you are reading this piece, think of the one thing you could change right now that would save the bees, preserve real food for your family, or shift your little corner of the Earth for the good? Remember your first inspiration; taking that one action could literally change your world!

What Is Earth Day Really?

I read this great article in Live Science about Earth Day. Did you know that:

[t]he first Earth Day was in 1970. Nelson, after seeing the damage done by a 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, was inspired to organize a national “teach-in” that focused on educating the public about the environment.

And, I have to tell you that walking our talk and sharing what we’ve learned is right up the Home Team’s alley.

Why Is It Important?

In Machaelle’s own words:

[T]he comprehensive IPCC report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.N.-sponsored expert panel on climate change) that was released on 3/31/14 has shown that the environmental situation is down-spiraling at a rate far faster than previously predicted. Over the year since that report came out, the deterioration that concerned scientists has continued but at a much faster rate than they thought was possible.

Machaelle goes on to say:

The picture it [the IPCC Report] presents is too large and it’s difficult to wrap our minds around it in any kind of practical or meaningful way. I read a poll that, at first, was disturbing to me. It showed that the majority of those polled did not want to hear anything — not one more thing — about global warming or climate change. They said that they just ignore all that stuff. I call this the “Voldemort Syndrome.”

But, Machaelle then shares what’s important to every member of the Bee Wild family:

By wide margins, [people] cared deeply about air pollution in their area, the quality of food they eat, the water quality and what comes out of their taps, water conservation, and the problems and high cost of fossil fuel. Eight major environmental issues were listed in the poll and in each case their concerns and interest not only polled high but their interest had increased over the past year. They care about what they can immediately see, feel, touch, taste and hear in their lives.

So instead of just waiting for governments and corporations to wake up to how we are effected by environmental shifts, she’s suggesting that we take the power to change things for the better into our hands. That is the Voldemort Earth Day Challenge.

• The Home Team grows some of our food. About a month ago, we spent one Sunday putting together this year’s container garden:
